I’m never sure what to think when professors and teachers see the links between the scientific discipline and a religion, but I suppose it can be a good thing, mostly.

I sort of agree with your scepticism. What this proves is merely that meditation has an effect on the brain. Which is good: it means that we aren’t determined only by our upbringing and genes, but also by what we do. Ought to be self-evident, but scientists need to prove it and have.
The issues beyond that are however still in tact: whether there is something that reincarnates for instance. Not proven either way. Whether meditation can lead to ‘enlightenment’: not proven either way.
Still, it’s great that science no longer just has the effect of making people believe they have no controll over their lives.
I’m afraid my skepticism about this religio-scientific study comes from a different angle to yours – and that is the pro-Buddhist angle, and not the pro-science camp.
