This post is inspired by reading a friend’s Xanga blog. Here’s my chronology of a brat’s attitude from junior high up till my current attitude in university…
Yrs 7 – 8: A bit of an arrogant prick, loved Linkin Park, was rather spoilt through no one else’s fault but my own… was still trying to forge my own identity and lost several friends as part of the process and also as a result of my own blunders. Was interested in the Goth subculture and had a naive view of career paths at this point. Got told off a lot, was a bit of a softcore rebel to teachers and parents. But one thing made this time absolutely worthwhile… my lessons in the Religious Studies classes – none of this “Catholicism only” rubbish, we got taught almost everything, and that was when my interest in palaeontology (something I was interested in as a kid) wavered and my interest in religion solidified.
Yrs 9 – 10: First time friends started to pick up on me as a philosopher of sorts, all the way back in year 9 in West Island, there were one or two guys who once called me a philosopher. This was only meant in tease since I myself didn’t know what philosophy was about, but I left WIS at the early mid-way of year 10 in January 2003 to go to Brisbane Grammar School (starting yr 10 all over again). Lived away from parents in a boarding house for the first time, my interests definitely clashed with many Aussies. Withdrew into super nerdishness (not that it wasn’t fun). First time in love and not single.
Yrs. 11 – 12: Interest in martial arts stimulated by watching way too much Japanese cartoons and playing way too much Street Fighter and King of Fighters at the local arcade after school. Still too lazy to actually join a club. Laziest era of my high school life, sometimes woke up as late as 10:00 on the weekends. Regained my old habit of waking up early back in HK whenever I went home though. Boarding house tends to do that crap to you. Was interested in Taoism, then became a staunch advocate of Buddhism. Oh yeah and I was part of the schoolies crew 2005. Best fun on the Gold Coast ever, will never forget it.
Uni yr 1: First year at college. It’s pretty crazy, but I never got any craziness (i.e. didn’t get into threesomes). Joind the UQ Karate Club and did boxing for a while too, finally had a physical activity to call my own. Got interested in a lot of sports. Lost touch with a lot of old friends from high school, although to a certain extent that’s been mended. A year of ups and downs, but the best thing that happened? Buddha Warrior was born and I started blogging. :) Awww… aren’t I sweet?
Uni yr 2: Became even more into Buddhism, now am actively interested in formally taking refuge.
Uni last semester as undergraduate: See above baby. Oh yeah, and I’m looking forward to going home.
It’s been a confused life till two years ago… even now I have many questions to ask, many journeys to make, many answers to find. But all this time there’s been one thing that hasn’t changed yet: my love of good food.
Which reminds me, it’s time for some arvo tea. Hope you found this session funny and also made you feel good about your own history. :P Until next time…
