Hello! Sit down with some cookies and chocolate. Kick your feet back and relax. Tonight I’ve selected three excellent music videos for your listening and viewing pleasure. It’s going to be a tour of the senses.
The first one is not really a music video since it’s only got a frieze of the band members, but it is a great political song from Disturbed, one of my favourite English-singing bands. It doesn’t take a philosopher to recognize the dangers of a people idolizing a leader to the point of mindless sheep-worship, and the explosive ‘Deify’ brings the smackdown on the most recent of these leaders. If anything this is more of a feast for the mind, and is easily the most hardcore of our suit of songs tonight.
This second one is ‘After Dark’ from Japanese band Asian Kung-Fu Generation. I selected this video because I personally think the MV itself is artistic genius, and I especially like how our protagonist attempts to hide his new… powers from his colleagues and the people around him. But as the song goes to show, shame is no deterrent to real determination. Youtube has surprisingly good sound, I have the song as an mp3 file but its quality is inferior to that of the video.
Now this final one is the one of the most recent flagship songs from Jay Chou, my favourite Mando-Pop star. 青花瓷 (Ming Porcelain) mixes lovely traditional Chinese wind and chime instruments with a slow, easy listening, sensual pop beat and a gentle melody befitting an imperial court. To those who have watched his 髮如雪 (Hair Like Snow) MV before, I know Jay’s used the ‘doomed lovers’ reincarnation’ theme before, but give it a chance. It’s not often that music videos have such good meanings behind them these days, especially mainstream American music. In fact, the only American bands I consistently listen to these days are Disturbed, Armor for Sleep, Linkin Park, and Goo Goo Dolls. I’m looking to get into more easy listening aside from bands like Disturbed and Goth Metal titans HIM. But to be honest, because of songs like 青花瓷 and 髮如雪, no one has yet supplanted Jay as my favourite modern singer.
Hmm… you guys got any chocolate left?
