Any Aussie readers reading this better get their circuits down to the nearest/best cinema in their area and revel in the excitement that may well be the biggest movie of the year. This is probably the only time I have been eager to watch a Hollywood movie in a long time (the other time I remember was in 2005 when Batman Begins came out).
That’s right, Earth is the flashpoint of an interstellar war! Who are you rootin’ for, Autobots or Decepticons? I personally like Autobotsbut I understand completely how many people prefer Decepticons. Furthermore, if you are fanboy like me and have looked at the tech specs of Optimus Prime and Megatron, Megatron is in fact statistically more powerful than Prime. Not to mention that the Decepticons are built specifically for war and destruction whereas the Autobots are more constructive and peaceful, reflected in their preferred disguises. We only have 3 “pure warriors” in the cast of Autobots this year, them being Prime, Ironhide and Bumblebee. It’s a pity Arcee was kicked out of the Autobot cast. It would have been nice to have a female Transformer on the team (as ridiculous as that sounds). I was thinking Ironhide’s relationship to her as her trainer could have been explored if she was included. So far, her 2007 toy incarnation and Ironhide’s movie incarnation are the most fun figures – Arcee has incredible play value for a mere Scout Class figure: cool transformation and a whopping 3 energon weapons that can combine to create a crossbow bigger than her body(or used separately), and Ironhide for his complex transformation and his badass twin quad-missile launchers and the four missiles included with them. Protoform Optimus Prime is the most creatively sculpted figure, and it is nice to know that Optimus Prime did not always look like a truck before coming to Earth.
Anyhow, the Decepticons are looking great, aside from Frenzy, who is useless. My favourites so far are Blackout and Megatron. They have made Megatron, in my opinion, even more powerful and evil than his G1 incarnation because they have elevated him to a “cosmic” threat, almost like a demon who spells the end of any planet he lands on. At least, this is what his description on his Leader Class toy packaging implies: Frozen in Antarctic ice for hundreds of years, MEGATRON is finally free, and his might will make the Earth quake, the stars fall from the sky, and the very pillars of heaven shake. As the most dangerous TRANSFORMER ever to stalk the galaxy, he has no known weaknesses and only one purpose – to capture the AllSpark and rule the Universe. Nothing – neither the humans’ armies or his ancient enemy OPTIMUS PRIME can stand in his way!
